A Demand for Blood: The Cherokee War Around Chattanooga

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park invites the public to attend a free 45-minute talk at Moccasin Bend National Archeological District on Saturday, February 14 at 2 pm.  Parking will be at the future visitor center site off Hamm Road on Moccasin Bend.  “Special Event” signs will be posted along the road to help guide visitors to the program location.

The program will focus on the longest war that raged in the Southeastern United States – the Cherokee War.  This war, beginning in 1776, raged until 1795 and is often associated with the Revolutionary War. However, it actually had its roots in the aftermath of the French and Indian War and had more to do with broken promises and ill treatment than alliance with England.  The fighting raged in the area around Chattanooga and passed along the banks of Moccasin Bend and over the slopes of Lookout Mountain.  Heroes emerged, but were they really heroes?  Were the villains really the bad guys?  This talk will examine those questions.

How we view events is often determined by where we are born, or what we are told.  However, when you look at things from a different perspective, things can change.  A look at this little known conflict that had huge ramifications on the history of the local area might even change participants’ views of more well-known events that occurred later in time.
